When it comes to "fame," this "Genuine Tourist" can make very few claims. BUT, my wife's sister Joan (recently deceased), married a cousin of the famed gangster from the 1930's, "John Dillinger." So, I can name as my acquaintances, Jim and Steve and Rex Dillinger, all brothers who hang out legally around Noblesville, Indiana. Just to prove how "connected" I am to the "gang," I can "snitch" on them and tell you they are right now (06-24-09) wetting their fishing lines in a Canadian lake on an 11 day fishing trip.
Then, their is my rather "distant" connection to "Baby Face Nelson" who was also famous and a part of John Dillinger's bank robbing gang. He was the brother of my childhood dentist. My father thinks perhaps our local dentist was always a bit poor than he should have been because he keep "bailing out" his brother.
Well, in view of the preceding, i.e., my strong connection to THE "John Dillinger gang," I thought it only fitting and proper that on a recent trip to northern Wisconsin I should visit the location of a big shoot out between the Dillinger gang and the FBI. A small white sign on Hiway 51 in the shape of an arrow directed my father and I to the "John Dillinger Exhibit" in the Little Bohemia Lodge near Manitowish Waters. The phrase "Little Bohemia Lodge" must have been lodge in my brain from an old John Dillinger movie.
So, we stopped and looked over the exhibit, which included many personal belongs of "my friend John D" that he had left behind when his gang made their famous April 1934 escape from Special Agent Melvin Purvis of the Chicago office of the FBI. Of course, it really looked like the site of a shoot out because of all the bullet holes in the walls and windows. Interestingly, most of the shooting was reportedly done by the FBI that killed a local resident and two Wisconsin Conservation Corp workers, although Baby Face Nelson also killed an agent. You can read a fairly detailed account of the gun battle at --
Perhaps you would be interested also in seeing the new movie about John Dillinger (played by Johnny Depp) scheduled to be released in theaters on July 1st, 2009. Early reviews about the movie have not been positive, but perhaps you could see it and judge it for yourself. If you would like to see several short clips from the movie, go to --
Of course, the entire gang got away even though almost all of them left on foot and the FBI had the only road in blocked with two cars. But, you may have more luck capturing the Dillinger gang in Canada if you hurry. Jim (my brother-in-law), Steve, and Rex, and nephew Caleb, are intensely focused "fisher persons" and would probably not notice any danger approaching their campsite "ringed by two large RVs!" If only they had told me the name of the lake or better yet, left me their GPS position . . . sorry!
